so it turns out that consuming various types of alcohol (from wine to hot punch) is probably not a good idea before attempting to carve pumpkins. that's what happened last week and this sad attempt at a "glitter pumpkin" is the result. though, i don't know that choosing sobriety before carving would've helped the chances of this pumpkin looking any better than this.
